Bruce
Gillespie’s Fan Guest of HonourSpeech
On a summer’s day, about three and a half
years ago, I received aletter from the Bidding Committee for this convention —
Aussiecon Three, the 57th World Science Fiction Convention. I read that letter.
It flutteredto the ground from my paralysed hand. Even I was stunned into
strickensilence. That piece of paper was a letter from Jean Weber inviting me
tobe the Fan Guest of Honour at Aussiecon Three if Australia won the bid.
My reaction then, as now: ‘Why me? Surely
somebody has made a terriblemistake. They’ve got the wrong person. What did I
ever do to them?’[More...]

The teachings of the Jedi all gone sour.
Back in black, now with helmet, cloak,
And he’ll kill his own family for a joke,
I said: Hey, Darth, take a walk on the Dark Side.

Convention Mailout of Souvenir & Pocket Program Books
Souvenir and Pocket Program Books have now been
mailed to all attendingand supporting members who did not attend Aussiecon
Three. AussieconThree, the 57th World Science Fiction Convention, was held in
Melbourne,Victoria, from 2 to 6 September 1999. Aussiecon Three expects overseasmembers
who were not at the convention to receive their copies of theSouvenir and
Pocket Program Books early in 2000. Australian attendingand supporting members
who did not attend the convention should havealready received their copies.
The Souvenir Book and Pocket Program Book were
mailed separately to eachmember in order to minimize postage costs. The mailout
was delayed bymore than a month because of radical changes to the rules for
overseasmail that were unexpectedly introduced by Australia Post on 4 October. After
investigating the impact of the rule changes (a 300% increase inthe cost of the
mailout) and a number of commercial alternativeservices, Aussiecon Three
eventually chose to use TNT Mailfast for themailout.
Enquiries about the post con mailout can be emailed
to: publications@aussiecon3.worldcon.org
